If, like me, you are a lover of outdoors, passionate about being active and keeping fit (and you don’t mind getting a little dirt on your shoes), then you should consider signing up for one of the many obstacle course races being run annually worldwide.
Though most courses are generally not for the fainthearted, they come in a range of different levels, all of which are designed to push each individual to their physical and mental limits.
Incorporating obstacles into athletic challenges is not exactly a new concept; in fact it dates back thousands of years to the times of the old Olympics. Over time the type of obstacles being used has become more diverse (and challenging!). It is believed that the first obstacle/endurance race started with the first Tough Guy obstacle course, in 1987.
Each obstacles course comes with its own unique layout and set of challenges, some of which include high heights, walls to climb, heavy objects to carry, extreme temperatures, fire, ropes, 10,000 volts of electricity (!?), barbed wire, water, mud and even in one particular case zombies that chase after you as you navigate your way through!
You can opt for a timed race, or attempt it at your own leisure. Whatever your preference, one thing is for sure, you won’t be forgetting the experience in a hurry. So grab a group of friends, or run it solo, and check out what obstacle courses are running near you!
